Another prominent event, loved by drivers and spectators alike on the MotoGP calendar is the Qatar Motorcycle Grand Prix. First held in 2004, the Qatar Motorcycle Grand Prix stands in distinction from other races for being the only MotoGP race to take place at night. Racing under the inky black Qatari sky, on a winding track adds an extra dose of enthrall and excitement. The race is held at the thrilling Lusail International Circuit that has over the years seen some notable MotoGP drivers including Casey Stoner, Marc Marques, and Valentino Rossi.

The Lusail International Circuit, nestled outside the city of Lusail in Qatar, is a prominent venue for motor racing events. Equipped with permanent outdoor lighting, the circuit hosts electrifying nighttime races set against the backdrop of the sprawling Qatari desert. This aspect makes it a favorite among drivers and spectators alike. Due to its sandy habitat, the circuit is surrounded by artificial grass to keep sand from blowing onto the track.

History of the Lusail International Circuit

The Lusail International Circuit is an iconic racetrack with a rich history. Construction on the circuit began in 2003, and after the hard work of 1,000 workers and expenditure of $58 million, the circuit completed construction in 2004 and officially opened on September 30th, 2004. The circuit saw its first MotoGP race on October 2nd, 2004, which was won by racer Sete Gibernau. In 2007 permanent outdoor lighting was added to the circuit, making it compatible for nighttime races. History was made on the Lusail International Circuit in March 2008 when it hosted the first-ever MotoGP night race.

Stretching to a length of 5.380 km, the circuit consists of 16 turns and a main straight of 1.068 km long. Its twisting turns provide the ultimate challenge to the drivers, while the main straight offers them opportunities for high-speed racing.
